Dr. Antony Kalashnikov kala

Postdoctoral fellow
NRU Higher School of Economics

I am a postdoctoral fellow at the Higher school of Economics and the University of Alberta (on academic leave). My research focuses on Soviet understandings of futurity. My doctoral thesis, defended at the University of Oxford in 2019, examined the Stalinist monument-building program, which sought to ensure that the era would be remembered favourably by posterity, in perpetuity. It traced the effects of this goal on the style and form of Stalinist monumentalism, and analyzed the functions of this striving to "immortalize memory." I am currently working on a book, provisionally titled Monuments for Posterity: Constructing Stalinism's Alternative Future. Over the years, my publications on Soviet history and post-Soviet collective memory have appeared in Slavic Review, Canadian Slavonic Papers, Nationalities Papers, and Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History.
