Dr Valentyna Romanova

Valentyna Romanova holds PhD in Political Science from the University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukraine (2009).

In 2020 she joined the Japan Association of Russian and East European Studies.

Since 2017 Dr. Romanova has been a Co-editor of Annual Reviews of Regional Elections in Regional and Federal Studies published in the UK: issue 3 of volumes 282930, and 31 (https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/frfs20/current). In 2012-2016, she was an Elections Reports Editor at the same journal. 

Prior to moving to Japan, Valentyna was Senior Consultant at the Department of Regional Policy at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, Ukraine (NISS) and contributed to research-based policy advice on decentralization (NISS is the public think tanks subordinated to the President's Administration). Also, she was a Lecturer within a joint German-Ukrainian MA Program “German and European Studies” at the University of "Kyiv-Mohyla academy" and convened a course on European Foreign Policy (in English). 

While working in Ukraine, Dr. Romanova cooperated with Japanese scientists and led a team of domestic analysts, in charge of conducting desk research for the Dataset “Political Elites of Ukrainian Regions” hosted by the University of Tokyo, Japan. 

Prior to that, she conducted, with a Chevening Scholarship, research on good governance regarding regional differences, and, with a Marie Curie Fellowship, on territorial politics in Ukraine, at the University of Edinburgh, the UK (the Marie Curie report summary is available online: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/255522/reporting).
