Dr. Elena Baraban

Elena V. Baraban received her PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of British Columbia in 2003. She joined the Department of German and Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Canada) in 2005. Baraban’s research is informed by theory of trauma, Russian Formalism, structuralism and post-structuralism, and gender theory. Her research interests include Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries; representations of the Revolution 1917 and representations of WWII in Soviet and Russian cinema; Russian popular culture. She has published articles on Soviet and post-Soviet cinema and literature in Canadian Slavonic Papers, Slavic and East European Studies Journal, Ab Imperio, etc. Together with Stephan Jaeger and Adam Muller, she co-edited Fighting Words and Images: Representing War across the Disciplines (University of Toronto Press, 2012). Together with Stephen M. Norris, she has co-edited The Akunin Project: The Mysteries and Histories of Russia’s Bestselling Author (University of Toronto Press, 2021). In 2014-2016, Baraban served as the President of the Canadian Association of Slavists (CAS). She has been Chair of the CAS Nominating Committee since 2016.
