Lyailya Nurgaliyeva is an Assistant Professor of International Relations at Nagasaki University. She published several articles on Kazakhstan’s relations with such countries as China, Russia, Turkey, and Italy. One of her articles investigates a state behavior against the dominance and influence of a stronger state, such as “Kazakhstan’s economic soft balancing policy vis-à-vis Russia: From the Eurasian Union to the economic cooperation with Turkey” (2016). Her current research project is “China’s Silk Road Economic Belt Initiative and its impact on Central Asia”. Specifically, she explores the advantages and disadvantages for Central Asian states that might arise from its implementation.
