Dr. Adalyat Issiyeva
Adalyat Issiyeva holds a Bachelor of Music from Almaty State Conservatoire and master’s and doctoral degrees from McGill University. Presently, she teaches at McGill, Carleton, and Concordia Universities in Canada. She is the author of a number of articles on Russian Orientalism and book Representing Russia’s Orient: from Ethnography to Art Song, recently published by Oxford University Press. In this book, she explores the political implications of nineteenth-century Russian art songs with oriental subjects and presents a story of how long-forgotten peripheries of the Russian empire contributed to the formation of the Russian musical identity. Her research was supported by Fonds de recherche de Québec sur la société et la culture (FRQSC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and a Schulich School of Music Scholarship.
