Claire Bunschoten studies food in relation to power. She recently completed her Ph.D. in the department of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is currently a Mellon Humanities Fellow at the New York Botanical Garden. Her doctoral research examines vanilla as an ingredient, flavor, fragrance, and euphemism for race in the United States to analyze its relationship to normative identity positions.
