Activity format descriptions 


The event will be in-person with certain streamed sessions (all presentations to be recorded).

Five activity formats will be available at the forum:

  • Lightning talk
  • Presentation of research findings or education initiatives
  • Poster presentation
  • Roundtable (panel discussion)
  • Workshop

Lightning talk

Lightning talks are thought-provoking, practical and spark conversations. They summarize and highlight the impact of one of the following:

  • Education strategies
  • Best practices in teaching and learning
  • Education initiatives
  • Research projects related to education. The project can be at any stage of completion

Format of each lightning talk

  • 3-minute presentation
  • 1 slide e.g., PowerPoint

*NOTE: you will be required to indicate the impact of the strategy, initiative, practice, or research you present.

Format of lightning talk sessions

  • The Forum program committee will group individual lightning talks into sessions
  • There will be a 45-minute moderated discussion period with all presenters following the lightning talk presentations

 

Presentation of research findings or education initiatives

These presentations share:

  • Up-to-date research
  • Expertise
  • Practical experience
  • Stories of success and best practices

Format of each presentation

  • 15-or 20-minute talk
  • Slide shows (eg., PowerPoint) may be used

Format for sessions featuring presentations of research findings or education initiatives:

  • The Forum program committee will group individual presentations into sessions of 2 to 4 presentations
  • Presentations are followed by a moderated discussion (moderator provided by the program committee)

 

Poster presentation

For this activity, the presenter prepares a poster in advance. At the Forum, the presenter informally communicates the poster’s information through discussions with Forum attendees.

Posters can indicate:

  • Current research
  • Innovative practices or strategies
  • Preliminary results or final outcomes

Format for posters

Posters typically include pictures, data, graphs, diagrams, and narrative text on large paper backing. Size of post boards provided: 4ft x 6ft 

Format for poster presentation sessions

Posters will be presented at scheduled sessions during the Forum.

 

Roundtable (panel discussions)

Roundtables involve 2-4 speakers who share their:

  • Up-to-date research
  • Expertise
  • Practical experience
  • Stories of success and best practices

Format

Panels are 75 minutes total, consisting of:

  • 45 minutes of presentations and discussion by panelists
  • 30 minutes of discussion with audience

 

Workshop

Workshops involve facilitators presenting and trying out educational materials, processes, and/or best practices. They are interactive. 

Format

  • 75 minutes
  • Facilitators present materials and/or processes
  • Facilitators must also lead an interactive activity involving audience participation
