Vanessa Flowers is an artist from Hopedale, Nunatsiavut. She began crafting at a young age when she attended a local sewing circle in her hometown, where she made her first pair of slippers. She continued to make slippers along with other art: dolls, earrings, keychains and brooches, and later began creating more elaborate beaded pieces. She primarily works with moosehide, sealskin, rabbit fur, antler and beads.
Today, alongside her sister Veronica they continue to craft and sell art through their Instagram page: @vandvcrafts. Vanessa and her siblings were also fortunate to be taught by their grandmother, Andrea Flowers, how to make kamek before her passing. Vanessa’s work has been featured in various exhibitions across Canada. Along with her sister Veronica, they have facilitated many sewing workshops, both online and in-person. Vanessa holds a Certificate of Indigenous Language Proficiency from UVic (through the Pirurvik Centre in Iqaluit), a B.Sc. in Environmental Science and a B.Ed. in Primary/Elementary, both through MUN Grenfell Campus. She is currently working as a skills teacher and program developer with Inotsiavik Language and Culture Inc.
