My name is Aghalingiak Ohokannoak, I am from Ikaluktutiak (Cambridge Bay), Nunavut. Recently Graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Art from NSCAD University; I studied photography, film, multimedia, history, and digital art, with my main focus on painting and drawing. In High School I had made a couple of murals on either suicide awareness or the history of the arctic. After my first year at college, during summer I worked for the GN Dpt. of Mental Health and designed and painted on the Ikaluktutiak Public Swimming Pool (In collaboration with GN Dpt. of Justice and the Hamlet of Ikaluktutiak/ Cambridge Bay). The following year in the fall I had made two large scale paintings for the Mental Health Facility in my hometown that are displayed on the exterior of the building. During my second year of university I was recruited as a student research assistant with Inuit Futures and studied Inuit Embodied Practices. After 2 - 3 years of research, “Kakiniit Hivonighijotaa (Inuit Embodied Practices & Meanings)” March - September 2022, was curated by me under mentorship of Jocelyn Piirainen at the Winnipeg Art Gallery - Qaumajuq. That same year I created four large scale paintings for the exhibit “Kanok Piniaka (Process of Inuit Embodied Practices)” September - November 2022, at the Treaty Space
Gallery of NSCAD University which was another culmination of my research into Kakiniit /Tunniit / Inuit Traditional Tattoo History. Expanding the research of my culture for my Graduate Exhibition “Reconnect / 偲ぶ / Itqakhaijuq” with Hinata Wilson, February 2023, we showcased artwork that connected to home for us; my artwork consisted of six paintings (including my childhood blanket my Anana had made) which had shown the growing appreciation to reconnect with my own culture, my hometown, and family.
