Dr. Fangyu Liu

Dr. Fangyu Liu is a process metallurgist at Hatch Ltd. Fangyu earned his PhD degree in metallurgical and materials engineering from Colorado School of Mines with a research focus on the electro-reduction of rare earth elements in the molten salt system. He also holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in metallurgical engineering from Central South University China. His academic and engineering background involves hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, electrochemistry, recycling, and mineral processing with a focus in critical metals such as rare earth metals, nickel, copper, cobalt, and lithium. 

At Hatch, Fangyu has worked on greenfield and brownfield studies and projects with different roles: process metallurgist, subject matter expert, process lead and project manager, technology develop project lead. Through several project engagements in support of the lithium-ion battery value chain, Fangyu has developed extensive technical knowledge from primary battery metal resource extraction to End-of-Life battery recycling.
