Located in the heart of downtown Montreal, 4TH SPACE is a uniquely flexible, street-level venue that acts as a gateway onto the research and learning activities at Concordia University. Through a series of events, 4TH SPACE regularly engage with a new question, project, or initiative brewing at Concordia. 

In the space, they help put the research of Concordians into action through experiential learning activities like interactive installations, research-creation experiences, workshops, hack-a-thons, and public talks. 4TH SPACE also facilitates learning by hosting residencies, performances, and screenings.

4TH SPACE is an immersive experience designed to bring knowledge and ideas to life. It offers programming grounded in innovation and creativity, revealing research and experiential learning activities that focus on compelling issues, surrounding humans, culture and society – in inspired and inventive ways.

Are you curious about NFTs? Want to make your own? Join Jazz Rossi and Anne Ouellet for a hands-on workshop exploring non-fungible tokens. Learn the fundamentals and explore your creativity during this 2 hour event.

Math and Stats 1:01 Workshop and Information Session:

What is your favourite mathematical and/or statistical concept? Join us for a creative workshop and learn how to make a 1 minute and 1 second long video answering that question. At this workshop, participants will get tips and tricks for communicating concepts in plain language, a list of resources, including royalty and copyright free audio, video, and video editing freeware, in addition to a live demonstration using these resources.

Music Curation with Lexis from Music Is My Sanctuary:

Rapid changes in media platforms and listening habits have opened new opportunities for great music curation. However, there are just as many challenges that come with creating online radio, articles, playlists, mixes, etc. Let’s discuss together how to create musical projects that are meaningful and impactful.

Pre-launch of the Decolonial Toolbox:

Concordia University’s Office of Community Engagement, the Montreal Indigenous Community NETWORK and Mikana pre-launch the Decolonial Toolbox: Educational Pathway at Concordia University’s 4th Space on June 3 2022. During this event, Indigenous guests have the chance to familiarize themselves with the tool and hear the story of creation and design from the team and collaborators.

Augmented Reality Art in Public Space:

World renown media artist Tamiko Thiel (@tamikothiel) gives a public artist talk on making augmented reality art projects that explore the interplay of place, space, the body and cultural identity in political and socially critical media artworks. Thiel began designing AR installations in 2010, many of which have been urban interventions. She is a founding member of Manifest.AR, and a number of her AR projects are held in permanent collections with cultural institutions such as the MoMA, NY, and the Whitney Museum. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her media artworks (spanning 35 years), including the 2018 Visionary Pioneer Award from the Society for Art and Technology, Montreal.

Critical Materialities: Towards Resilient Environments and Technologies with Alice Jarry:

Chair in Critical Practices in Materials and Materiality and its affiliated laboratory, the Speculative Life Biolab of the Milieux Institute (dir. Dr. Alice Jarry). Through research-creation that combines with material and environmental science practices, the Chair draws on the potential of residual, bio-inspired and bio-composed materials to examine the socio-environmental, aesthetic and political issues related to material and cultural production.
