Training for Tomorrow: Addressing the Vocational Attainment Gap for Québec’s English-speaking Communities

Despite growing demand in Québec’s trades sectors, English speakers pursue vocational training at less than half the rate of their French-speaking peers. This presentation draws on PERT’s latest research to explore what’s behind that gap—from limited awareness and harmful myths to access issues and language barriers—and what this means for English speakers’ employment pathways. 

We’ll share key data insights, discuss factors shaping participation, and make the case for why vocational training can be a game-changer for English speakers seeking stable, well-paying careers across the province. As Québec’s economy and key industries shift, the need for renewed investment in vocational training and reskilling is growing—making this an especially urgent moment to address the barriers facing English-speaking communities. We pay particular attention to the role of French language learning in vocational programs, and the challenges of insertion into Francophone workplaces and labour markets.

Jill of all Trades: Breaking Barriers, Building Futures

 Jill of All Trades (JOAT) is a dynamic educational initiative that promotes gender diversity and inclusion in the skilled trades. In collaboration with the Riverside and New Frontiers School Boards, JOAT offers a full-day, hands-on workshop that introduces female high school and adult education students to a range of trades. Participants explore fields such as Bricklaying, Automobile Mechanics, Stationary Engine Mechanics, Carpentry, Welding and more—all in a supportive and inclusive environment.

JOAT also features mentorship opportunities with female alumni and industry professionals who share their personal journeys and offer guidance. These meaningful connections help participants build confidence, discover new career paths, and see themselves in roles traditionally dominated by men.

Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and community support, this workshop empowers women of all ages to break barriers and explore rewarding futures in the skilled trades.
