Amplifying Our Strengths, Protecting the Vitality of English Education in Quebec

Toula Drimonis - Opinion Columnist, Writer, and News Producer

These are difficult times. The current government has cut education budgets drastically – and English-language institutions have not been spared. On the contrary, some argue that they’ve been presented as a problem for the survival of Quebec’s French language and culture, and have been the target of repeated attempts to reduce their linguistic influence and financial viability.

English-language institutions must continue to fight for adequate funding and resources, address declining enrollment, and work to ensure quality education. But they also need to be loud and proud about raising public awareness of their strengths and continued value, and the many contributions these institutions are responsible for in Quebec.

With their focus on bilingualism, English-language educational institutions prepare their students for successful life and careers anywhere they choose to work. And our universities have been at the forefront of contributing to scientific and medical discoveries, which have benefited and continue to benefit all Quebecers, regardless of language.

As we head into a provincial election year, it’s imperative that anyone involved in English-language education strategically drown out any negative and divisive political rhetoric by collaborating and working hand in hand with Quebecers of all languages who believe in a stronger and united Quebec that values all its members. Quebec wins when all its educational institutions do well and thrive and produce competent, skilled, bilingual and multilingual Quebecers who feel like they can stay and build a good life here.
