Session 2C: Motivating Reluctant Readers
My Session Status
Workshop:
Motivating Reluctant Readers
Lea Beddia, Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board/ Independent author
In this interactive workshop, Lea will share effective, research-based strategies to inspire students at all levels to read for pleasure in and beyond the classroom. This will be followed by a collaborative activity to adapt an evaluation tool, allowing each teacher to leave with a ready-to-use resource tailored to their students' needs. In addition, Lea will highlight a selection of books and publishing resources specifically designed for engaging reluctant readers. The session is designed to equip educators with practical approaches and evaluation tools while supporting a love of reading.
Participants will collaborate to adapt an evaluation tool. The evaluation is designed to monitor students' reading development through the three ELA competencies: using language to communicate and learn, reading and listening to texts, and producing texts. This tool will be introduced during the session, followed by small-group work to adapt it to participants' student needs. All resources and materials will be shared at the end of the session.
