We can often feel like we and our students have multiple physical and mental ‘tabs’ open. What if we recognized that distraction is normal, and that attention needs to be cultivated rather than assumed? Over the past year, I’ve been working with a group of faculty, staff, and students exploring this question through contemplative and mindfulness-based approaches in their work with students. I will share a preview of insights and practices...
I speak with hundreds of students annually who struggle with their attention, and the #1 attention sucker is phones, social media, etc. I’d say 95% of the students I work with state it is the main source of their procrastination, their emotional regulation problems, and the main roadblock to them staying on their path. Tech is made to get one’s attention.
This brief presentation will touch on how social media algorithms "hack" our attention and behaviour, making screen-time changes feel challenging. I will explore the use of self-compassion when working toward behaviour change and share some practical, accessible tools to support more mindful technology use.
In this lightning talk, I would like to talk about some of the common internal triggers that make us prone to being distracted in a digital environment, and some practical tips to find a good balance. The session offers some practical strategies to regain control of our time, without quitting screens or relying on willpower.
