Indian visual artist and educator Ashu Gera, born in 1995, lives in Montreal, Canada. His education includes a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Painting and Printmaking from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India. Gera earned his M.F.A. at the California Institute of the Arts, working with Darcy Huebler, Jessica Bronson, and Tom Lawson. Gera is pursuing a Master's in Art Education at Concordia University in Canada.
Gera uses "Dope" as a metaphor to examine millennial culture's complex effects on cognition and society. His profound work explores instant gratification and digital-age excesses, where pleasure and addiction blur. Gera explores pornography's complex relationship with human desire and its effects on intimate relationships and self-perception in his art. He goes beyond fast food consumption to criticise society's obsession with convenience and its disconnect from traditional culinary practices and nutritional mindfulness. Gera sees social media as a double-edged sword that fosters isolation and a distorted reality while providing unparalleled connectivity. He also questions how media saturation affects attention spans, sleep patterns, and well-being by studying binge-watching culture. Gera's compelling work encourages viewers to critically evaluate these modern psychological addictions' personal and collective effects.
His work has been shown in Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Los Angeles, Texas, and Montreal. Gera's technical skill and deep engagement with current social issues make him an important contemporary artist.
