I am a Roman historian working on ancient agriculture, magic and ritual, and the senses, often at the intersection of these topics. I am particularly interested in how conceptions of scent and magic overlap and interact in ancient culture, from the pungent "coercive" incenses which Greco-Egyptian magicians made to command the gods, to temples plastered with milk and saffron to smell sweetly of divinity. My first book, The Scent of Ancient Magic, is forthcoming from the University of Michigan Press. I also post authentic Roman farmer's calendars and sensory impressions at @FastiRomani on Twitter.
