Loreley Franchina holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology. Her doctoral thesis (LCF, Université de La Réunion | DynamE, Université de Strasbourg) examines a Hindu ritual cycle held annually in La Réunion, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, wherein devotees walk bare-foot on hot embers after a period of preparation, fasting and abstinence. Her approach, which draws on the anthropology of performance, looks into the ritual dramaturgy that mediates the relationship between society, selves, bodies and pain. She is currently a post-doctoral fellow in Medical Anthropology at SESSTIM, Université d’Aix-Marseille.
