Originally from the United States, Carolyn came to Australia in 1994 after living in Japan for four years. Her AB (magna cum laude) from Harvard College is in social anthropology, and her PhD in cultural anthropology is from Columbia University. Her most recent major publications include the co-authored Sounding Out Japan: sensory ethnographic tour (2021), The Beatles in Japan (2018) and Disability in Japan (2013). She is also the Editor in Chief of Japanese Studies, a Routledge imprint.
