Daniel Normark was born in Asmara, Eritrea in 1974. He is director of Uppsala STS, a multidisciplinary research network studying knowledge and society, Uppsala University and a researcher within that network. He is an associate professor in sociology (since august 2020) and holds a PhD (since dec. 2007) in science and technology studies (STS) at the sociological department, University of Gothenburg. He is affiliated with Medical history and Heritage, Karolinska Institutet, a research and curating organization managing the collections of KI. He has been a researcher at the Gothenburg Research Institute, especially Centre for Consumer Science (CFK) within the University of Gothenburg, at the Mobility Studio at the Interactive Institute and a research assistant at the Viktoria Institute in the Mobile Informatics Program.

His research focus on sites of negotiation from the interactions within the laboratory to the mundane features of mobility. His research includes studies on the organisation of medical research and education, academic leadership, the development of flexible laboratories, the creation of research-funding organisations in early 20th century Sweden, the industrialization of flavour, the history of the Swedish biomedical complex, the creation of 20th century medical professions, academic infrastructures, infrastructures of mobility, cycling practices, consumer logistics, public transport organisation, management of waste, the implementation of self service, 20th century urban mobility. Current projects include the history of sensory science especially within the food industry (beer, margarine and water) together with Ingemar Pettesson, UU; “hotelificaction” of medical research (or more specifically the agonistic meritocracy of scientific organisations); the organisation of academic infrastructures such as buildings and funding; the techno-politics of pedestrians and cyclists urban consumption together with Martin Emanuel, KTH. Active in teaching and higher seminar series and one of the organizers in the national STS meeting in Uppsala 2018 and part of the planning group for Teknik- & Vetenskapshistoriska dagarna, TVHD 2022, in Uppsala. His publications include articles in Mobilities, Applied Mobilities, Environment and Planning A, Space and Culture, AMBIX, Lychnos, Journal of Historical Research in Marketing and Encyclopedia of Life Sciences as well as several conference proceedings, books and reports from the medical history and heritage unit, KI.
