Henry Tsang

Assistant Professor / Registered Architect

Dr. Henry Tsang is an award-winning Canadian architect interested in the design and planning of healthy, safe, sustainable and happy places. Recipient of a 2020 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence for the design of the Calgary Japanese Community Centre, he possesses a diverse portfolio of works and extensive experience, practicing at Japanese architecture firm Nihon Sekkei. His projects include the Gunma Prefectural Cancer Center (Japan), the San Felipe Hospital (Honduras), the Tianjin International Airport Hospital (China) and the University of Indonesia Health Sciences Campus (Indonesia).

He is an active educator and speaker, currently an assistant professor at Athabasca University RAIC Centre for Architecture. He has also previously taught at Keimyung University (South Korea) and Herzing College (Canada). He also often serves as a guest lecturer and design critic at universities and conference worldwide, including Hanyang University (South Korea), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong), University of Calgary (Canada), Concordia University (Canada), Academy of Art University (USA), McGill University (Canada) and TED talks.

He holds a Ph.D in Architecture from the University of Tokyo as a Monbukagakusho Scholar, and graduated from a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture at McGill University. An active member of his profession, he is a certified LEED GA & WELL AP, secretary of the RAIC Calgary Network, acting ambassador of the Living Building Challenge for the International Living Future Institute, a member of the Board of Directors of Emergency Architects of Canada and a member of the editorial board of the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) and FOLD magazine. His professional affiliations include the Order of Architects of Quebec (OAQ) and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC).

In 2015, he was the recipient of the Educator of the Year Award by the NACC and the 2018 Robert Fung International Award of Distinction by McGill University.
